Women in Leadership Profiles
We have been lucky enough to be in contact with a range of females in different industries and roles who will share their experiences and views on the importance of female representation in their industry. First in the series is Amy Nicholson.
Name: Amy Nicholson
Role: Assistant Producer in TV
Company: Various TV Production companies on a freelance basis.
A bit about Amy: Hello! My name is Amy, and I am an Assistant Producer in the TV industry. I work on factual entertainment TV programmes, and my role includes everything from casting to script writing.
What is it like working in your company? I love being a freelancer as I can choose the jobs I would like to work on. I particularly enjoy working on programmes about cookery and animals.
Why did you decide to go into your chosen field?
I am dyslexic and I sometimes struggled with the idea of an ‘academic pathway’. However, I found that I was creative and I always made sure that I pursued what I enjoyed, as this is what I succeeded in. This would always be my best advice, ‘do what you are good at!’
What qualifications and work experience did you need to reach your current position?
I went to University and received a BA (2:1) in Film, Television and Digital Production. However, to work in my industry you don’t need any qualifications! You need a good work ethic, and be willing to learn!
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I adore the variety of my job and I love that I have worked on a range of programmes including Animal Park and The Great British Bake Off.
What obstacles have you overcome in your career?
My biggest obstacle was confidence, as I always worried my dyslexia would hold me back; it certainly didn’t! I have only been in the industry for 4 years since graduating from University, and I am already filming TV programmes.
Why do you think it is important to have a strong female representation in your industry?
I think it is extremely important to have strong female representation in my industry as anyone can make television. We all have our own ideas and creative direction and it is very important they are heard.
What advice would you give those wanting to take a similar career path?
Be confident! Be brave! And never ever give up! However, nothing is ever handed to you in this world, and you must go and grab every opportunity but, most importantly do so with kindness.
