Stephen Hawking
8 January 1942- 14 March 2018
Stephen Hawking was an inspiration to all. He is best known for his work on black holes and the theory of radiation. His discoveries made the studying of black holes possible.
In this week’s Blog we will celebrate his knowledge and creativity as one of incredible excellence. I personally will remember him as the Einstein of our time.
Stephen was born on the 8 January 1942 in Oxford. Shortly after he was born, his family moved back to London where his father headed the division of parasitologists at the National Institute for Medical Research (despite the risk of German bombing being mid-war!). Then in 1950, Stephen and his family moved again; this time to St. Albans. Here he attended the St. Albans School for Girls until he was 10. After that he attended St. Albans School for boys. At school he was a good, but not exceptional, student.
Stephen won a scholarship to University College, Oxford in 1959, where he studied Physics. Despite his boredom with university life, and his relaxed study habits, he graduated in 1962 with a First Class BA degree.
When he was 21 years old, Stephen was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. This condition meant he would eventually be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. He was told he only had two and a half years left. Shortly before this happened he had met his future wife, Jane, with whom he later had three children: Lucy, Robert and Timothy.
When asked in an interview about her father, Lucy said,
“People who have lived in war zones and people who have lived in really extreme circumstances seem to find something very, very inspirational in his (Stephen Hawking’s) example of perseverance and persistence and his kind of, ability to rise above his suffering and still want to communicate at a higher level, with humour, to a world population.”
I think that it is absolutely amazing that Lucy feels so strongly towards her father and I would completely agree that he is a huge inspiration.
Stephen died on the 14 March 2018. 139 years after Albert Einstein was born. He was famous and inspirational for many different reasons, so I ask you the question: ‘how will you remember him’?
