November is an exciting time, on the lead up to Christmas! During Boss Enterprises POP sessions, every Wednesday throughout October and at the beginning of November, the team have been planning up and coming events.
The key event centred around the Christmas spirit is the “Love in a Box” appeal that Boss promoted and carried out, with the help of the whole school. This included, wrapping shoe boxes up in festive wrapping paper and filling them with presents for less fortunate children in Eastern Europe. The boxes included gifts such as pens and pencils, notepads, small toys and even clothing, like scarves. This appeal was extremely successful with 336 boxes wrapped, packed and sent off through the Mustard Seed Relief Mission, whose mission statement is “Showing Love in Action”. The Boss Enterprises team want to say ‘a massive thank you’ to everyone that contributed to our whole school effort to bring Christmas joy to these children.
During our POP Elective session on Wednesday the 20 November, we hosted our first Over-60’s Club session of the season, ran by Boss Enterprises. This consisted of the Over-60’s club coming into school and playing a selection of board games, such as UNO, with some of the Senior Leadership Group who liaise with them on a regular basis. It was a big success as can be seen in the photos below, taken by Katy. Everyone really enjoyed themselves!
We intend to hold many more events, including Bingo, with this group, as we can see it as one of our main goals to ‘give back to the community’ in any way that we can. If there are any questions regarding the Over-60’s club please email boss.enterprises@invicta.viat.org.uk.
Another exciting event in the upcoming month is Burns Night on Saturday 25 January.
This is a Scottish tradition which celebrates the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns. Every individual Burns Nights may be different but the general agenda is:
- To start – everyone gathers, the host says a few words, everyone sits and the Selkirk Grace is said.
- The meal – the starter is served, the haggis is piped in, the host performs Address to a Haggis, everyone toasts the haggis and the main meal is served, followed by dessert.
- After the meal – the first Burns recital is performed, the Immortal Memory (the main tribute speech to Burns) is given, the second Burns recital is performed, then there’s a Toast to the Lassies, followed by a Reply to the Toast to the Lassies, before the final Burns recital is performed.
- To end the night – the host gives a vote of thanks, everyone stands and sings Auld Lang Syne, crossing their arms and joining hands at the line ‘And there's a hand, my trusty fere!’.
Tickets for Burns Night will be available soon at £35 – please contact:
boss.enterprises@invicta.viat.org.uk. If you are not a parent of Invicta, please do e mail us. However, if you have access to the WisePay system, tickets can be purchased through this. We hope to see as many people there as possible, as it will be a lively and exciting night where the Invicta community can come together.
