2016 Greece - Day 8
Greece Day Eight
One more site en route to the airport. Ancient Eleusis was dedicated to Demeter and Persephone and was associated in ancient times with the Eleusinian Mysteries, practised only by women whose secret rites were protected by the most sacred laws: any man caught trying to spy on them was executed!
It was lovely place to finish the journey with a curious mixture of Greek and Roman and an eerily strange cave where Hades was meant to have abducted Persephone down to the Underworld. The Year 9s and 10s carried out yet another sacrifice: this time a chthonic one (to the gods of the underworld), and were whistled at by security for practising black magic.
Off to the airport for our flight home. Imagine the joy when we all saw that each seat had a screen and a choice from all the newest films, all of us except Mr Giles whose monitor failed to work and who had to make do with a book and a complimentary glass of champagne from the Cabin Crew.
