What a week!
From Monday morning, there was a different atmosphere in the air. For me and the other Year 13’s, it was the beginning of our last week of school … ever. Filled with both excitement and worry, we spent the week celebrating, reflecting on all the great memories we had shared and getting in some last minute revision before Study Leave!
The Royal Wedding on Saturday was a perfect addition to the celebrations. Despite the mixed feelings towards the Royal Family seen on social media, the whole country came together to celebrate. Hopefully, the buzz around the wedding led to greater acknowledgement of the progressive actions the couple have been taking to create positive change. Harry served two tours in Afghanistan, set-up countless charity events across the world and created the Invictus Games - an incredible opportunity for mentally or physically injured war veterans to compete in an Olympic Style Event.
By associating concepts of gender equality, internationalism and inter-racialism with the Royal Family, Meghan also sparked a new wave of support for the monarchy. People flew all the way from the United States to be at Windsor to witness the event, with an incredible two billion people tuning in to watch. The couple have certainly united the globe.
Coming from a mixed-race background myself, I struggled to understand how Meghan Markle being mixed-race was such big news. However, I do think some attention is owed to the fact that, for the first time ever, a person of colour sat at the front of a British Royal Wedding Ceremony.
What a week indeed!
