2016 Greece - Day 6
Greece Day Six
As we woke up to the beautiful views of the Delphi olive groves descending miles down to the sea, it was easy to see why Delphi is famous for its natural beauty. We headed to the sanctuary of Apollo, situated on a large hill, much to our delight. The walk through the sanctuary was very rewarding as we saw the temple of Apollo, the theatre and the stadium. In true tourist fashion, out came the selfie stick, or as we called it... The Delphi stick. The sanctuary was very well preserved and stunning to see. We even saw our American choir friends!! Year 9s and 10s carried out a sacrifice.
The museum was full of beautiful sculptures and artefacts from the site. However, the gold brooch depicting Odysseus hanging underneath a Ram – famously praised by the Giles' – was on loan to the Museum of Montreal. We were devastated! Instead the highlight was the bronze charioteer, which was very detailed (he had gemstones for eyes and copper eyelashes) and beautiful. After visiting Delphi, it's clear why the Greeks believed it was the centre of the earth.
In the evening, after arriving in Athens, we got the tube into the centre of the city, stood on the Areopagus and saw the Acropolis floodlit, which was breath-taking. We then got to have an ice-cream in the town, where Miss Parker made a friend with a man whose name sounded like Ronaldo and who owned a lovely Bar.
