2016 Greece - Day 5
Greece Day Five
As we set out on a lovely day in Olympia, my shorts gave me the sense of strange impending optimism. As it was Easter Sunday, we had boiled eggs in our packed lunches, a special gift, Mr Giles told us, from the people of Greece. Some liked them, some did not. The original Olympic stadium was inspirational, and it's great to think they begin every Olympics here at the altar of Hera. All of which inspired the Year 9s and 10s to carry out a sacrifice to Zeus.
As we entered the stadium, the competition to win the relay was fierce. Congratulations to Year 9s who smashed the race, but life enduring shame to the Year 13s who finished last. The anticipation was overwhelming as Mr Giles geared up to battle it out in the race to see who the true Olympian amongst us was.
Unfortunately, it was not Mr Giles who won, but Sam Bartholomew, and to add insult to injury, not only did Mr Giles not win, but he came third, behind Lilly Ebsworth: bitter tears of defeat ensued. The whole Sanctuary was beautiful with abundant springtime flowers and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus very evocative. Inside the museum, we witnessed the beautiful sculpture of Hermes and Dionysus by Praxiteles, famous for his defined and very peachy buttocks. The sculptures were so detailed and it was a joy they survived.
In the evening, as we arrived in Delphi, we were invited to a concert of an American choir. The acapella group were fantastic and we particularly enjoyed their version of Rossini’s William Tell overture complete with mimes and gestures.
