Women in Leadership Profiles
We are delighted to share another 'Women in Leadership' profile with you this week. We have asked several females about their experiences and views on the importance of female representation in their industry.
Name: Hannah Worsley
Role: Senior Legal Secretary
A bit about Hannah: I’m in my early thirties and have been working at this company for over 12 years now. At the moment I work from home full time but would normally be travelling to London each day.
What is it like working in your company? Hogan Lovells is a large international firm and my office is based in London but they also have offices all over the world. I’m in the disputes between construction companies department. Working for five lawyers means I am always busy but often have to work with others as there are 45 lawyers in total in this one department. There are nine other departments working on various areas of law.
Why did you decide to go into your chosen field? I thought it would be interesting, which it has been and I don’t regret my decision.
What qualifications and work experience did you need to reach your current position? 5 x A-C GCSEs and a legal secretarial diploma. I also have A Levels which may have helped me to stand out. My work experience took me to two different law firms, one was a small firm near Maidstone and on two occasions I spent time at Hogan Lovells which led me to be employed by them when I was looking for a permanent position.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
As mentioned above, it is always busy with varied work from organising meetings, working on transcripts and helping to create bundles for court plus many other tasks and so I’m not doing the same thing all the time.
What obstacles have you overcome in your career?
I’ve worked my way from a trainee to a senior secretary and so have had to go through some extra testing within the company to prove my abilities.
Why do you think it is important to have a strong female representation in your industry?
At the moment all secretaries in the London office are female. Over the 12 years I have been there I have only worked with two male secretaries.
What advice would you give those wanting to take a similar career path?
Study hard for your exams and a college course would still be the way to go.
