Women in Leadership Profiles
Name: Sam Graves
Role: Co-Founder
Company: The Maidstone Distillery
A bit about you: I am a drama graduate, grew up in Kent, worked in London prior to the financial crash many years ago. I then worked in the public sector (NHS and councils) before embarking on the journey of creating The Maidstone Distillery with my husband. I am part time and am in charge of Front of House, all company administration and payroll, and am responsible for the design aspects of our products (labels, branding etc).
What is it like working in your company? We have started this business from nothing so it’s very dynamic and we’ve understandly been impacted by the pandemic. At the moment its like launching again, we’re open to the public once more and its wonderful to be able to meet people face to face again and talk to them about our passion. Days are very hectic, we’re either in production (bottling and labelling), distilling or hosting tours, tastings and gin making experiences. We have a great team and we all make sure to try and have a laugh which is very important!
Why did you decide to go into your chosen field? The history of distilling in Maidstone is so significant and really is a part of our nation’s history of gin, yet is so little known. We felt we could ‘own’ this and bring fascinating stories back to life. We also love making things, distilling and creating recipes, so this is such a great job to have. I have many if the so called ‘soft’ skills, people, design, administration, so I’ve been able to take a lead on these areas and own them.
What qualifications and work experience did you need to reach your current position? I’ve been a project manager and so had PRINCE 2 which I find has always helped me in every job I’ve had since, how to essentially make things happen in the most effective and efficient way – be it launching a bar, conducting research, etc. Other than that my design A Level and creative degree gave me a good eye for design but also inner confidence to stand up in front of a room of 60 people and feel like I can hold their attention and not hold back!
What do you enjoy the most about your job? Speaking to customers about our passion and showing them our distillery.
What obstacles have you overcome in your career? The biggest, and the one I am still overcoming, is the balance between being a mum and working. If I had any advice for younger women who want to have a career but are also looking to have a family one day, don’t let anything hold you back, you can do both, just be kind to yourself, be confident and believe in yourself.
Why do you think it is important to have a strong female representation in your industry? Drinks manufacturing is very male dominated, yet spirits and alcoholic bevarages appeal to both sexes equally, we should have women’s voices to ensure inclusivity and also to have a wide range of opionions and skill sets.
What advice would you give those wanting to take a similar career path?If you are looking to set up your own business – know that it will be so rewarding, you will own something and financially could be great for you, but the other side is its incredibly hard work, lots of hours and the ‘buck’ does stop with you.
Be prepared for a slog but a great sense of achievement at the same time!
