On Monday, 23 January, the MMF held its second session of Museology, a series of mini lectures for humanities students in partnership with the Maidstone Museum.
This week the talks were given by Eliza in 8N on the topic of ‘The Representation of Dragons Throughout History in Art and Literature’ and Izzy in Nightingale 1 who focused on ‘Stolen objects in the British Museum’. Both talks were incredibly well-researched and delivered expertly by Eliza and Izzy.
Eliza’s talk guided us from the Greek and Roman era right through to the 21st Century, exploring the different forms and representations of dragons that have appeared throughout history in myths and legends. She also imparted a valuable guide on how to identify different forms of mythical beast including the differences between a wyvern and a dragon (a wyvern is missing it’s front legs compared to a Western dragon’s four).
Izzy, on the other hand, broached the delicate topic of the British Museum’s collection exploring the history behind how many of the artefacts were acquired and the modern repatriation efforts of many countries to have their history returned to them. Izzy educated us on the subject with great poise offering a balanced and fair approach to a subject which has attracted much controversy in the media. The talk also featured a much enjoyed game of ‘Stolen or Given’ where Izzy challenged the audience to vote on whether certain artefacts had been donated to the museum freely or acquired through other means.
Both talks were extremely informative and we look forward to welcoming you all to the third installment of the series on Monday, 30 January in the 6th Form Common Room.
