Science Fair 2023

Ms Hollett sent this report:

Every year our Year 8 students take part in the Science Fair!

They spend a couple of months working independently to investigate an area of science they find interesting. Their projects can take the form of research projects, experiments or even inventions!

Science Fair 2023 was a huge success and all the students should be so proud of their projects!

We had such a wide range of projects all completed to an excellent standard. Deciding on a winner is going to be so difficult this year!

The Science Department will be giving out the Golden Bunsen Burner trophy after Easter. The team that is selected will then go on to represent Invicta at the Trust-wide Science Fair in May. Can we win two years in a row?

This year we have a record number of students entering their projects into the Big Bang Competition. Good luck to all those projects.

Leah from 8I says:

The Science Fair was extremely entertaining. The process of creating the board and seeing other people’s creations was wonderful. Within the Science Fair you get to learn something new from a variety of different projects. It was brilliant for building up our confidence especially when talking to others about our chosen project. I really enjoyed the Science Fair as we were able to get as creative as we wanted with our projects, I think it’s a great opportunity.

Ava from 8I said:

On the 22 March, all of Year 8 attended a Science Fair, for which we had made display boards for. We could either conduct an experiment, or do research on our chosen topic. I thoroughly enjoyed attending the fair, as it was an opportunity to display all of our hard work, and share information based on the topic we had researched. Whilst we were there, Year 7 students were enjoying the presentations and speaking to us about our boards. It was great to see how much they enjoyed learning and finding out more about our topics. There were many different types of projects, and so it was very interesting to learn more about each one! The fair was a great opportunity to add to our Invicta Diploma, as it shows our resilience and aspirations for our topics. I have been excited for the Science Fair since I joined Invicta, and I loved every part of it!

Some of the Year 7 students had the opportunity to visit the fair. This is what they had to say:

Lilly from 7A sent this report:

The Year 8 Science Fair was an amazing opportunity for both Year 8 and the students who went to see it. It was a great chance to learn new things and it was so inspiring as there were so many different topics to read about. It took up two classrooms and the hall, so there were many projects to look at and find out about. One of my favourite things was making my own skin tone using the colour theory. There was such a wide range of presentations from frogs to skin tones to ‘Is the five second rule true?’.

After the fair we were asked to write a brief about one of the stalls, here is one of mine: Lucy in 8I was trying to find out why frogs croak. She did this by using by using different websites and opinions. In conclusion she found out that they croak to scare off predators and to get a mate. She wanted to find this out as she used to have frogs. I found this project interesting as I like frogs too and this is a question I wanted to know the answer to.

It was a great experience, and I can’t wait to make my own presentation next year.

Moyo in 7A had this to say:

The Year 8 Science Fair was an amazing experience. There were so many exciting experiments and projects to explore. The atmosphere was inspiring, everyone was so enthusiastic about what they had chosen to investigate. The Year 8 students showed independence, teamwork, aspiration, enterprise and the ability to take the initiative.  I was impressed how everyone had something different to present and how freely they could answer any question thrown at them. I most enjoyed the investigation into ‘Which Invicta staircase generated the most bacteria?’, as it was about the school, and it helped me to understand the benefits of a clean environment. Well done Year 8!
