Year 7 and 8 - BAE Systems Workshop
On Monday, 24 April Year 7 and 8 students received a presentation from representatives of BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force, and the Royal Navy. Noor in 7I sent this report:
We learned about how engineering can be applied from the depths of the ocean to outer space and everything in between. A few students were given a series of challenges to complete, which included: assembling a satellite dish while wearing astronaut clothing, with instructions communicated from a distance; completing a large puzzle putting the planets in order, within a time limit. We also discovered how submarines have to be strong enough to support the enormous pressure in the sea, how deep the ocean actually goes and how submarines operate. I found out that engineers make up a large proportion of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
A few surprising facts we learned:
Some jet planes are stuck together with glue!
Space rockets have to take their own oxygen to make the fuel burn in space.
A fun way to memorise the planets is: “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos”, this stands for: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
So far, there has never been a woman on the moon – but the first one will go next year!
They used a huge inflatable sun and a marble to represent earth, which in real scale, would be approximately 12 football pitches away from the inflatable sun! I really enjoyed their presentation and I hope we have more opportunities like this.
