Film Careers Trip: Pinewood Studios

On Friday, 24 November, the A-Level Film Studies cohort experienced an extraordinary afternoon at the much-anticipated Futures Festival hosted at Pinewood Studios. We departed Invicta at lunchtime and made our way to the famous studios, home of the Bond franchise, Harry Potter and Kingsman: The Golden Circle to name but a few. The festival offered a brilliant array of exhibits and enabled us to gain a fascinating insight into the film industry as a whole.
After being paired with our lovely guide, we were greeted by an assembly of iconic characters and props, including the irreverent Deadpool, the beloved Chewbacca, and the classic car from "Cruella". We had the opportunity to speak directly with postproduction editors, cinematographers and even prop coordinators, while witnessing their creative works unfold before us.
The second section featured an exhilarating fighting class wielding lightsabers with professional stunt coordinators, along with a multitude of stalls from various film specialist schools and businesses with expertise in VFX makeup, set architecture and more. While meeting R2-D2 was a particular highlight, I thoroughly enjoyed engaging in discussions with the employers and industry experts to find out what a career in the film industry might look like for me Post-18, as well as seeing the vast range in specific industry interests of my peers.
The final section was a haven for aspiring filmmakers and enthusiasts, boasting an impressive array of cutting-edge camera equipment, featuring the likes of a Steadicam and a dolly. Some of us were even lucky enough to try our hand at maneuvering these cameras, gaining hands-on experience of cinematography. Overall, the trip was a fantastic experience, thanks to extensive exhibits and generous employers who eagerly answered any questions we had throughout the afternoon. Departing in the evening, we all left feeling incredibly inspired and in awe of the captivating industry that is film and we cannot thank Mrs Harrington and Miss Bennett enough for organising this once in a lifetime trip.
