Staff Profile - Ms Teague
Name: Ms Teague
Role: Lead Teacher of Computer Science
Subject: Computer Science
Favourite Book: I really enjoy reading, it gives me a change to relax at the end of a day! I don’t know if I have a favourite book but I have a favourite author. I particularly enjoy reading books by Jodi Picoult as her books always thrust you into a scenario and make you think – I don’t want to say too much but there are a lot of twists and turns. Saying that recently I have 2 books I’ve really enjoyed are Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus – this book focussed on the struggles of women in science in the early 1960s. The other is the Thursday Murder Club series – they’re an addictive read and I can’t wait to start the 4th one!
Favourite Film: I couldn’t possibly choose! I like a lot of different genres and watching them with different people. At the moment, my children and I, are quite into Encanto, Wreck-It Ralph 2 (breaks the internet – of course I’m watching that one) and Spiderman: Into the Spider verse. Over the summer I watched all the Marvel films in chronological order so that was fun! The 1st Harry Potter movie came out on my birthday so that will also always have a special place in my heart… I’m just a geek really.
Hobbies: I quite like knitting and crocheting – I once knitted an animal hat for all the teachers who went on a school ski trip with me (I made a cow for me). I’ve been trying to learn calligraphy over the summer but it’s not going well – I’ll keep practising through so watch this space!
Favourite Food: I could try and pretend it’s something very posh but it’s not, I love a bit of pesto (basil not the red one) pasta!
Favourite Holiday destination: Anywhere with a beach where I can run in the waves. I grew up on the Isle of Wight so I’d take a sunny day on a beach pretty much anywhere – I’m very happy with a staycation.
If you did not work in a school what job would you like to do? That’s a great question. I worked at the 2012 Paralympic games as a games maker – helping out the world’s media with their technical issues and ensuring they could report the news on time. I think if I hadn’t gone into teaching I would have done something geeky like that.
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? Probably my degree, I was 1 of 5 women to start my degree in Computer Science and the only one to finish it. That’s quite a lot of pressure but it’s led me to champion women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and it’s given me a lot of opportunities along the way that I wouldn’t have gained otherwise.
Why did you decide to work in education? I’ve always enjoyed teaching others. I was a qualified swimming teacher by the age of 16 (I lived on the Isle of Wight you needed to know how to swim) and from there I always enjoyed training and teaching others. At my Saturday job or when I moved to university and started working. I got a job as an eLearning Technician at a school for a 1 year contract and then decided I wanted to teach from there. Had to stick with my geeky subject though, I didn’t get the opportunity to learn how to code or understand how computers worked when I was at school I had to learn it all on my own so I wanted to provide opportunities for young people that I didn’t get.
How have you found your first term at Invicta? It’s been an exciting start to the new term. All the students and staff have made me feel so welcome. There’s a lot of things to learn but we’ll get there together.
