GCSE and A-Level PE - Sports Lab
Mr Shingleton sent this report:
On Wednesday, 17 January a group of Year 9 GCSE PE students and Year 12 & 13 A-Level students had the opportunity to visit Canterbury Christ Church University Sports Labs.
A-Level students started the day in the physiology labs. They were able to experience the ‘Bod Pod’, a high-tech piece of equipment to measure body composition. Next up was the altitude chamber, where students were shown how scientists can manipulate the climate inside the chamber and the benefits this can have towards performance. Finally, the Vo2 max test, where students had a chance to take part recording data and measure their own performance. GCSE students started by testing their lung function, recording data and using normative data to make comparisons. They then moved onto blood pressure, learning about different data sets. The groups were then able to swap round.
In the afternoon A-Level students had a Biomechanics workshop. They used force platforms and other high-tech pieces of equipment to perform a gait analysis and speak about lateral differences and trial and record their own results. GCSE students completed a sports team fitness testing assessment, taking part in several activities that sports teams use to test different components of fitness. After this they had the chance to using the reaction wall, testing their reaction time competing against each other.
Students had a real insight into top quality sports science testing and facilities. I would like to give a special mention to Mrs Neve who accompanied the trip with myself to help make the trip possible.
