Women in Leadership - Katie Price, Osteopath
Name: Katie Price
Role: Osteopath
Please tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m a self-employed osteopath working in private practice.
Why did you decide to go into your chosen field? I was always interested in biology and in working with people. I didn’t feel like medicine would be right for me so a manual therapy was more appealing.
What qualifications and work experience did you need to reach your current position? A-Levels in sciences, followed by a 4 year undergraduate degree (BSc).
What do you enjoy most about your job/role? Meeting and helping different people and working with them to achieve their personal goals (whether they are sport related or just recovering from an injury).
I also like that there isn't too much paperwork so when I'm at home I can relax and don't have to bring work back with me.
Are there any obstacles you had to overcome in your career? I found studying for the degree hard as it involved lots of lectures and exams. I'm dyslexic so that was a bit of a challenge, as were A Levels.
Why do you think it is important to have strong female representation in your industry?
I think women make great manual therapists and many people out there still associate male practitioners with more success due to the general assumption you have to be strong to get the job done. It's great to show them otherwise.
What advice would you give to those wanting to take a similar career path?
Go for it. It's a great interesting career. There are opportunities to specialise in working with children, animals, sports etc so it's really diverse.
