A-Level English: Virtual Othello Conference

On Monday, 29 January, Year 12 English Literature students had the fantastic opportunity to attend a virtual Othello conference hosted by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. During this hour we were exposed to a live panel of Shakespeare experts, who were able to answer all our questions about this challenging play.
As a part of the conference, we were also given access to multiple videos deep-diving into integral scenes of Othello and painting a picture of how the play has been brought to life on stage. This has been informative by deepening understanding of Othello and allowing us to construct reflections of the play utilising these unique secondary readings.
I found this very exciting as we received answers to important themes in the play as well as being shown the level of deep discussion and extra readings associated with English Literature at both A-Level and university level through the many descriptive and explanatory phrases which added a level of depth and detail to the explanations. The aspect of the conference that struck me the most was the immense level of historical context which deepened insight into society at the time Othello was written.
