Film Studies: British Film Industry Residential
Jessie-Mae in Roddick 1 sent this report:
Over February half term I had the opportunity to take part in the British Film Industry Art department specialist course. This course had limited places and was open to the whole country so it required me to create a portfolio of my work and passion for film.
It was a one-week residential course and our time was split between Bristol and Cardiff university. During the week I learnt how to use industry standard software such as Photoshop and Sketch-up. We used our skills to decorate plain sets to reflect our scripts in local studio, Boom Satsuma. In the evenings we had a chance to engage with industry professionals such as a Wes Anderson storyboard writer. At the end of the week we participated in tours and workshops at Wolf studios (producers of Doctor Who), Mangostone prop-makers (worked on Bridgerton season 2 and 3), Bottleyard studios (Andy’s safari adventures and Tipping Point) and a working prop house.
This course has enabled me to work with professional equipment that would otherwise be inaccessible and has led me to choose a career in either Graphics or as a Set Dresser. I now plan to apply to Film Art department courses at university!
