Food Technology Trip - Naples, Italy
Mrs Bond sent this report:
On Saturday, 9 March 30 Food students and 4 teachers from Invicta and SST set off for a Food centred trip to Sorrento, Italy. Students took part in and experienced activities to increase their knowledge of where food comes from, food processing and preparation as well as cross curricular links with Geography and History.
On arrival at Naples airport the group went straight to Sorrento where they enjoyed a pizza making workshop, followed by eating the delicious pizzas! Students also had time to explore Sorrento itself, which was still beautiful, despite the rain showers. After this was a short walk to David Galateria to understand the process of gelato making and get to sample the outcomes!
On day two we visited a Mozzarella farm, which also grow oranges, lemons and olives. Students had a tour of the farm and a talk about the production of mozzarella and the history of it on the farm. Rosa has been making mozzarella by hand at the farm every day for many years! Students were tested on their knowledge of cheese making and key terms! Students were then able to taste the mozzarella, speciality olive oils and marmalades; plus the delicious, freshly made ricotta cake.
It was then a short coach journey to a pasta factory. Students were immersed in a VR experience that taught them all about the history of pasta production in the area. This was followed by an amazing 3 course pasta lunch.
On the final day we visited Mount Vesuvius National Park. The rain held off long enough for the climb to the crater, however the fog had come in and so, sadly, no views could be seen, it was also rather chilly at the top! We then travelled, in the rain, to Pompeii. Luckily the rain stopped for the wonderful tour of the Pompeii ruins.
The students, and teachers, had a wonderful few days in Sorrento and the surrounding areas. We look forward to future enriching experiences with our students.
