Year 12 Biology - Kew Gardens
Dorota in Frank 2 sent this report:
The Kew Gardens trip was a wonderful chance to perform field studies and see plants from around the world. We explored the gardens in groups to visit the different greenhouses ranging from the Palm House, which housed plants from a tropical climate with a stark increase in temperature; to the Princess of Wales Conservatory which had many cool variations of cacti.
We also walked through different gardens detailing the evolution of culinary and medicinal plants. There were also many art installations that were fascinating interpretations of nature, one massive metal structure of a beehive reproduced the sound of the bees kept at Kew gardens.
After exploring the gardens, we completed the field study where we measured the biodiversity of different areas of a field using quadrats, we also had access to new equipment to measure factors such as soil moisture content, which was a good learning experience.
The whole experience was really fun and informative and the staff were extremely helpful throughout the whole day whether we needed help using equipment or giving fun facts about the plants we were viewing.
