Throughout the Half Term holiday, we have had a number of students travel overseas.
Throughout the Half Term holiday, we have had a number of students travel overseas. Our World School delegates from Year 12 have been at a conference in Japan with Mrs Brewster, whilst Mrs Lloyd and Mrs Johnson have accompanied students to Silicon Valley in America. The blogs we have received highlight that they have had a wonderful time, meeting new people and certainly experiencing new cultures, whilst gaining an insight into the world of business and education in foreign climes. It is an opportunity of a life time and one that I know our students will relish in years to come. This made me think about the need to reflect on the concept of ‘opportunity’. It is something that we encourage all our students to engage in, through a wide range of mediums. I strongly believe that opportunity favours the bold. This is a lesson that I have learned over time, but I probably was not aware of its importance when I was much younger. It is without doubt, something that I now use to guide our students; if somebody offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, I recommend that you say ‘yes’ and then learn how to do it later! Hindsight has taught me that the right opportunity can change your life, so we must ensure that we do not pass it by. I am therefore thrilled to hear from our student blogs that they have embraced the wonderful opportunities they have been given this half term. I congratulate them on being ‘bold’ and know that in years to come, they will appreciate the fact that their bravery has given them wonderful opportunities that they will cherish, I am sure.
There is a Chinese Proverb – ‘Teachers open the doors, but you must enter by yourself.’ I know that we encourage all our students to have the confidence to do this. So, as our theme for this week is ‘Be Aspirational’, it is also pertinent to reflect on a quote that I like: ‘A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.’ Winston Churchill
