Where has, this term gone? It has flown by!
Where has, this term gone? It has flown by! We have certainly achieved a great deal; every day of the term has provided us with lots of opportunity to be involved in all aspects of school life. We only have to look at our gallery for photographical evidence and read our newsletters to see exactly how much has been achieved. However, it is the concept of ‘reading’ that I want to reflect upon. When we are all so busy, reading can sometimes be put ‘on hold’. We often make the excuse of not having had enough time.
So, one of the things I am looking forward to this Christmas is catching up with some reading. It is an absolute joy to be able to look forward to reading. A love of reading is a legacy that we should nurture in our daughters and never take for granted, as we consider the awful global statistics around young people’s literacy: one in four young people in developing countries are unable to read a sentence, according to the latest UNESCO research. Globally, almost two-thirds of illiterate adults are women - a figure that has remained almost static since 1990. If current trends continue, the poorest young women in developing countries are not expected to achieve universal literacy until 2072.
It is not unusual for young people to drift away from reading around adolescence, especially as an increasingly digital world presents many other options. That is why we try very hard in school to encourage girls to keep reading for pleasure and we are focused in our approach this year to support this project. At this time of the year, there are always lots of ideas to suit different tastes in annual round-ups such as:

Let’s all enjoy some reading this Christmas! Please consider buying your daughter a book this Christmas and enjoy it with her too!
Have a wonderful holiday, with lots of family time at home.
