Our return to school last week was certainly not easy for all of us. The early starts, the cold weather and the fact that we were all working at a considerably faster pace than we have been used to throughout the holidays, came as a ‘shock to the system’. However, it was enlightening to see so many of our students, who were delighted to be back in school – seeing their friends and sharing one another’s company. There were countless animated reunions throughout the first few days back. Our sense of community was clearly evident. It really ‘hit home’ to me that the warmth of our school is derived from the wonderful relationships that our girls have with one another.
We work our entire lives building friendships. From primary school, where we all learn that ‘it takes a friend to make a friend,’ through to adulthood, where we mingle in a work environment too, we crave closeness with other human beings. We just need to know that someone is ‘out there’ and ‘understands us.’
Whether we have a small group of close friends or an expanded group of personalities, each of our friendships brings something new to our lives, inspiring us to see the world in a totally different way, giving us a new shoulder to lean on, and a new cheerleader to root us on.
Each friendship offers something totally unique and irreplaceable. Each friendship ultimately makes us who we are. So, this week, as we embark upon the second week of our academic term, I am sure that our students will embrace our theme for the week, which is ‘Be Proactive – take the initiative’. I want them to take the initiative to further develop their friendships and make our school even more, a very special community!
