2017 Geneva Conference Day 3
It was a snowy start to our final day in Geneva! The students went straight to their committees, after queuing through airport-style security with their suitcases. The students formally debated in their own assemblies until lunchtime, before attending the afternoon closing ceremony.
Rhiannon Thomas had her language skills put to the test when she was asked to work as an interpreter, requiring her to translate from French to English live to ensure the debates could continue.
All attending teachers were granted an amazing opportunity to listen to a presentation on Intellectual Property, by experts. This was followed by two cohorts of students from a French school and a Spanish school, who presented on their school-based entrepreneurial projects which were both patented. One was on how natural lighting was used in their school, reducing energy consumption, and the other on a device allowing electric cars to be easily charged. Both groups of students are dealing with major sponsors and are setting up their own companies, alongside taking their school exams.
In the afternoon we attended the official closing ceremony, where the students were congratulated for their amazing performances, professionalism and insight into the world of Intellectual Property. This took place in the main WIPO Assembly Hall, allowing us to see and use all the impressive technology used by ambassadors from around the world.
The students have thoroughly enjoyed their experience, mingling with students from 44 schools from 21 different countries, such as the United States, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Morocco and Taiwan (just to name a few!). They have been impressed by the high calibre and professionalism of all participants.
