Having just had a lovely Half Term holiday, it is pertinent to highlight our Theme for the Week, which is ‘Be Open Minded about the Arts and Media’. Holidays, always provide us with the opportunity to do something different – exploring the arts and media will undoubtedly be part of this for many of us; having the time to visit art galleries, watch films or indeed, travel to new places. Certainly, I know that our students who have visited Italy, Australia, Canada and Barbados over Half Term, have all experienced new forms of art from their trips. Equally, they have all used different forms of media to share their new-found knowledge with us. It has been very satisfying to see so many photos and read a variety of Blogs and Twitter profiles of the wonderful student and staff insights from these visits. I have certainly looked forward to these every day!
Nevertheless, being open minded about the arts and media, is something that is particularly important in the context of being reflective. I am sure that when we all look at pieces of art or read something, we are sometimes quick to form a judgement. How many of us have been to an art gallery and made a judgement without really understanding the background behind the artwork?
So, I would like to advocate the following quote as part of this reflection:
‘A mind is like a parachute. It does not work if it is not open. If someone is able to show me that what I think or do is not right, I will happily change.’
I shall therefore really look forward to seeing how our students ‘open their minds’ and ‘change’ their outlook over the course of the next week!
