Embracing Opportunities
The Spring Term began with internal examinations for Years 11 and 13; last week, Years 9, 10 and 12 also sat internal examinations. These are a very useful measure of current progress and will identify areas that will require further focus. However, it is important that we think about participating in wider opportunities to further our learning and also to participate in events that will broaden our life skills.
Despite the examination focus in the school, it was great to see many students from the relevant years opt to attend an excellent Masterclass on the Chemistry of Medicines. They were very engaged with the information about drug development and how our bodies react and host these chemicals. There were a number of interactive activities that really enthused the students. The excitement and buzz of conversation and discussion on topics of interest can really motivate and inspire us all! The students who attended the Masterclass felt it was very worthwhile and were keen to know when the next opportunity would be for them to attend a similar event. Other opportunities this term include: ASPIRE meetings, Academic Subject Hub Discussion groups, Lectures, Debating, Public Speaking, as well as Clubs and Societies. It is so easy to let time slip by without embracing the wider opportunities available.
As a designer for many years before becoming a teacher, I find museums and galleries inspirational. When taking our creative students around exhibitions to further their ideas process, I always come away with lots of ideas for creative projects for myself and will have added to my journey of life-long learning. Our GCSE Art and Photography students are visiting galleries today to encourage and inform their creative process. Interacting with original works of art can be an extremely emotional experience. This also applies to live theatre. The Broadening Horizons theatre trips are also opportunities to engage with the Arts. The touring production of ‘Legally Blonde’ will be our next opportunity for Invicta students.
The many Clubs and Societies that take place at Invicta offer a wide range of opportunities to further personal development. The Debating Society is very popular; all years contribute to important discussion and debate. Students from this group, have gone on to represent the school in national competitions. Many transforming themselves through taking risks and going outside their comfort zones. The battleground of live debating can be something to behold; particularly in competitions where expert judges interrogate students, regardless of age and experience. Also, the art of defending the side that you have been given, regardless of your own views, can help you to become more objective and develop a greater understanding of opposing views. We hope that many of our school community will take part in the annual ‘Invicta Speaks’ Public Speaking Competition which will take place after Half Term. The art of being able to use your voice to create impact and inform can be a very powerful tool for engagement in the wider world.
Do embrace the wider opportunities that life at Invicta can offer you - re-evaluate what you are engaged in. Is there a debate, lecture, workshop or Club that you could join or participate in? Do not let the remaining school year disappear without ensuring that you have considered your own life-long learning experience.
