Snow Joke!
The week before last, was truly mayhem! With all the extreme weather in Kent, the school was unable to open for 4 days. But on the brighter side of things, we were all able to have fun in the snow; pupils were uploading pictures of their snowmen and videos of snowball fights with friends on social media. Although we were not together physically, it was fantastic to be able to share so much with one and other online – something which would not have been possible just a few years ago!
Using technology, teachers were able to set work and students could catch up on missed lessons. E-mails with tasks, PowerPoints and links attached were sent to pupils on their iPads, to complete during the ‘snow days’ so that we could balance fun and school work.
Mr Ehren set up Microsoft Teams for his Computer Science class, where students could access resources and communicate with each other using the chat feature. Members of the Mathematics department were also using OneNote to provide work and this was also a really easy way of getting resources and finding out about what we should be doing.
Miss Gulvin said in her recent e-mail – “The heavy snowfall provided us with chances to adapt our routine and do things differently. This means that we are likely to have used a lot of skills required for our PixlEdge Certificate. These included organisation skills (which can be shown by creating timetables to manage tasks over the ‘snow days’), initiative (which can be reflected by helping to clear snow), and communication skills (shown if people have visited the elderly or vulnerable people). So, a lot of progress on PixlEdge is expected!”
Although the snow disrupted school days and events, everyone is up to date with their work and lessons with the help of technology. After a long time off school, we are back at school and ready to face the future challenges and education available. Technology, used positively and properly, has once again proven to be a huge help in the face of a possible ‘crisis’ and it is now hard to imagine what our lives would be like without this wonderful resource available to us.
