Organisational Skills
Often, for students, the start of a new academic year is a time to organise work, stay on top of homework, and meet deadlines. Fortunately, for me, organisation is something that I am very good at, especially whilst completing my A Levels.
Being someone who loves to get involved in extra activities means that I must be productive and use my time wisely, so that I can enjoy extra activities, whilst not worrying about school work which needs completing.
I study 3 A Levels ,which means that I have one study period and one free period each day. I use these times wisely, as this is 2 hours which I can use to complete homework. I actually prefer to complete homework at school, whilst I am able to speak to teachers if I do not understand. Then, once I have returned home, I complete further reading into my subjects. This is particularly important for Business Studies, where I must apply my knowledge to current situations, so maintaining an awareness of the news is vital. Having now completed my first year of A Levels, I have established a timetable which suits me very well.
My additional activities include tutoring and learning to drive! I tutor a Year 9 student in Mathematics, as part of my volunteering section for Duke of Edinburgh. I absolutely love doing this, because as well as helping him, it acts as a revision tool for me. Learning to drive meant that I needed to fit in lessons with school hours. Normally I had a lesson on a Friday evening or Saturday morning. I was very lucky that I was able to find an instructor who I really got on with, so my experience was not stressful, and I was always put at ease. This also meant that my learning process was quick, and I only took 4 months to pass! Having now been driving for just over a week without L plates, I am becoming more used to driving on my own! I can now drive to and from school each day, so I get to school around 8 O’clock, allowing me to complete work before school as well.
I am currently in the process of university applications. I have started to write my personal statement; a task which is proving more difficult than I thought! I am not short of ideas, but I find it sometimes tricky to put my ideas on paper. The teachers, however, are very supportive, and help me to overcome this barrier. I hope to study Law with Business, and I plan, in the short term to hand teachers a first draft to check, and I can then make necessary amendments.
Organisation is such a key skill, particularly during GCSEs and A Levels. It is essential to stay on top of homework. Try and do it the day it is set so that if you need help, you still have time to speak to teachers. I have made timetables in the past so that I allow time to complete all tasks – these are really useful!
So, my advice to everyone is be organised – the best people in this world are busy people and with good organisation it is possible!
