Togetherness Among Children
As the dark evenings close in and colds and bugs are getting harder to avoid, it can be all too easy to think that this is the miserable time of the year. I think this makes it even more impressive to see how our student body pulls together for a shared cause and demonstrate just how much we can make a difference to those in our wider community.
Last Friday was Children in Need; another year of seeing TV personalities and celebrities put on an incredible night of entertainment and highlight all of the incredible fundraising events by the British public to encourage those at home to call up and donate to worthy causes in the UK and abroad. Invicta played their part too; as well as seeing the normal school uniform and staff outfits adorned with Pudsey Bear ears, spotty socks and Children in Need t-shirts, we wanted to get more involved with the action of fundraising. Year 7 held a cake sale which was incredibly popular, and while the sweet aroma of sugar frosting emanated from the Hall, our cyclists were hard at work in Reception. 59 students and 23 members of staff cycled on two exercise bikes in Reception non-stop between 7.30am to 4.00pm, totting up a total of 397.08km! A special mention must go to a lycra-clad Mr Ryder who cycled 12.53km in only 20 minutes. We are so proud to see that our nearly £700 of fundraising and efforts to promote involvement in working together for Children in Need helped contribute to this year’s overall total of £47.9m!
Sixth Form will next take the reins on fundraising through our eagerly-anticipated RAG week. As well as the normal (and well loved) lunchtime events including Stars in their Eyes and Man-O-Man, the ever-impressive RAG Dance Show and our awe-inspiring fancy dress efforts, Sixth Form will also being having a Community Day on Friday 6 December. This is something we launched for the first-time last year, to great success. We know that Invicta raises an incredible amount of money every year to our chosen charities and we celebrate knowing the impact that these donations make, but our students want to personally give back to the local community and donate not just their money, but their time to worthy causes we support. Our RAG committee and Senior Prefect Team have been hard at work to confirm placements for all 332 Sixth Form students for this one day, with placements ranging from volunteering at Ashford food bank, making soup for the local Soup Kitchen, to creating bug hotels to support our local environment. As well as this, we will be hosting an entertainment event in school for elderly residents from local care homes, which will include live music and bingo.
It fills me with pride to see our students pull together and do something that’s bigger than themselves. To be selfless, and not take for granted how much we have, as they want to help others around them. We are so fortunate to have students who care and feel strongly about making a difference in the world we live in!
