Invicta Vlogs
Approaching things differently
Week four of the new Spring term has begun. Virtual School continues and despite the challenges, there are still very many opportunities for engagement and personal development of skills and interests, and it is never too late to start. The gained time at home could enable you to start a new course or join a Club or Society mid-year; new students are always welcome. So why not explore what is available, get involved and build memories.
On Monday evening, six teams from Years 11 to 13 took part in the Invicta Virtual Senior Debate Competition. The school hall was replaced by the ‘at home’ venue. The debates on the motions for the switch to electric cars, funding of the Arts and the Covid - 19 vaccination were very closely fought. The students had spent their time wisely and had prepared their speeches and their arguments with clarity and confidence. The standard of debate was very high throughout. The two teams selected for the final, delivered the debate of the night, setting out very clearly their views on the motion ‘External examinations for aged 16 students should be removed from the school curriculum.’ The clear and articulate views of both teams was impressive, and the standard was just as high, despite being a virtual event.
Further memories were made on Monday, for a number of students receiving news about offers of places at Cambridge university after many years of preparation. Debate and discussion were also evident at the recent Inspire group meeting. It was very pleasing to see an increase in student numbers attending the Inspire group, in particular those from Year 7. The opportunities for discussion and interaction led to a request for more frequent meetings. It is also good to see an increase in participation in the school virtual Public Speaking competition which is taking place next week. This will be followed by the virtual Junior Debate competition.
Many other competitions are being adapted to the challenges of delivering through a Virtual format. This includes the Bar and Magistrate Trial competitions. The important thing is that despite the change in format, these opportunities are still happening and help provide a focus for the week along with things to look forward to. The Bar Trial students have had the opportunity to work with Alex Mullen, an excellent trainee Barrister who has given up a considerable amount of time advising the students in their various roles after school every Wednesday, throughout the Half Term. He is also going to deliver the next lecture on ‘Cannibalism and Cave Explorers: A Practical Introduction to Legal Reasoning’.
These events will provide lifelong memories. Sadly, the planned school Burns Night was another victim of school closure. However, this enabled me to hold a Zoom Burns night supper, with quotes, recitals and traditional toasts to the laddies and the lassies! The pandemic and the demands of Virtual School may have necessitated adaption and changes to plans but the show must go on! Set small regular challenges, look for opportunities to meet, engage, socialise and discuss throughout your week. Create new memories for a positive future!
