Simplexity
As we embark upon the second half of this academic year, it is pertinent to think about ‘life’ in general as well as our approach and achievements in school. Things right now are both simple and complex. There is no doubt that we have all experienced life in a much ‘simpler’ form over the last 12 months. However, in contrast, many of us have had unbelievable challenges that could be considered complex and challenging. I read an article this weekend, that referred to a technique called ‘simplexity’.
‘Simplexity’ is a technique where you verbalise all the complexity of a situation and you keep talking until you talk yourself into a statement of simplicity; it is as if you get to the truth the more you dig. This made me think! For me, what starts out as possibly being a rambling collection of thoughts, it can, with a structured process and the help of those around you, quickly enable you to find solutions to things.
It is very simple. If those around you are willing to really listen and push your own thinking with things like, ‘go on’, ‘tell me more about that’, ‘what I am hearing from you is XXXX, is that right?’ then things can easily be broken down into something that then appears so much easier. More often than not, we cannot get to ‘simplexity’ on our own. Those around us, such as our friends, parents, teachers, inspirational role models can help us in our thoughts. We need to listen and help each other. We need a group of people who understand and will help us get even better.
There are challenges and opportunities, stresses and strains, highs and lows in what we are facing, but what I know is that we will look back on this period and realise that what we did in our community in the most challenging circumstances was, complex but we can look back upon this and say that with the help of those around us, we overcame those challenges together!!
I have no doubt that the next half of this academic year, will still have a combination of simplicity and complexity. Life will always be like this; I actually believe that most of us thrive on a degree of challenge. But, what is important is the fact that we have, over this lockdown, realised the importance of the simple things in life and our ability to value a sense of community and how we can ‘together’ help one another. Please do not let us lose this. Let us too, take the concept of ‘simplexity’ and embrace this moving forward!
