Comeback
Comeback, the ‘return of someone to their former glory’, otherwise known as recovery, resurgence, or revival. Prime Minister Johnson declared that the doors of schools could be reopened from the 8 March 2021 and despite taking this promise with a pinch of salt, there was certainly a sense of relief at the thought of finally interacting with friends and teachers alike. As a student, there were no doubt, moments during this lockdown, where I felt frustration. merely at the thought of that purple icon for Microsoft Teams, but on hearing this news, the word ‘comeback’ came to my mind.
As we embark past the halfway point of the school year, I feel it is important to take this experience in our stride and have the ‘comeback’ we have all been hoping for. Emotions will be mixed, and anxiety may remain at the prospect of another change. However, the faces of friends missed since 2020 and finally experiencing the clarity we hope for, I believe, will allow for a sense of normality to return; I for one, need this.
The 8 March is marked annually as International Women's Day, one of the most important days of the year for me. Celebrating women's achievements and raising awareness about our past and ongoing fights against inequality is very relevant to the theme of ‘comeback’ because, without doubt, all women have experienced systematic setbacks, which we have had to ‘comeback’ from; a notable icon being, Anne Frank. At such a young age, she had to experience separation from her family, being stripped of her humanity and placed into forced labour but amongst others, she was able to persevere through such transgressions and share her story with the world.
As young women, we must encourage and support each other's strives for individualism and identity, of which we all sometimes struggle with. Upon returning to school, we will be confronted with social contexts we missed during lockdown, such as possible disagreements or conflict, but how we act during such times must be considerate and sensitive to those around us. So as a student body ,despite changes that we may see within our peers, it is important to respect them and support their strives.
The theme for International Women's Day 2021 is 'Choose To Challenge’ and because every setback is a setup for progression, as Invicta students, we must remember that excellence never comes easily. So, let's all choose to challenge emotions such as anxiety or fear to have our ‘comeback’ today, and this coming week as we return to school.
