Opportunities
Throughout my years in secondary school, I have slowly and steadily attempted to challenge myself. This ranged from improving my leadership, social and teamwork skills. As I became older and I am now in my last year of secondary school, I realised how important it is to take chances to further challenge myself. Throughout my school years I have always tried to get out of my comfort zone; whether that was from participating in CCF in my previous school, and putting myself forward for more responsibility and leadership, or something simpler like voluntarily answering a question in a class that I was struggling with. One key aspect I learnt was that making mistakes was completely acceptable and even useful. Furthermore, self-growth comes in many different shapes and sizes. Whether one is leading a football team or doing a small presentation in front of friends, what is important is how one can learn and take in the experiences.
Along the way, I have made many mistakes. I struggled with certain topics and exercises in CCF. I could not pass one of my tests for the first time and I couldn’t remember how to undertake field exercises as a team. Being chosen for promotion was very exciting although I did not believe that I deserved it. However, I rose to the challenge and learnt many new things in order to become even more of a capable cadet. Some of the lessons that my peers and I produced were not as good as I had hoped, but through our mistakes we were able to make better ones and greatly help younger cadets we taught.
I believe that I have been able to grow a lot during my time in the Sixth Form at Invicta. I was welcomed graciously by many people within our community and helped to gain confident in my abilities. When I went through the Hustings process, I showed that I wanted to make a positive impact to our school. But I also wanted it to be an opportunity where I can improve my public speaking. Presenting in front of the previous senior prefects as well as virtually in front of the school was daunting, but a very valuable experience as it has allowed me to build my resilience in tough situations. The support I received from my friends made me more determined, and being successful in the Hustings process made me proud.
To conclude, I believe that self-growth can take a while to develop. I still have a lot to experience and improve on, but it excites me that I can find opportunities for myself that will allow me to do that. It can also be frightening being out of my comfort zone, so it is important to adjust to my own pace. The mistakes we make are temporary and can be great lessons for us. They will allow us to become more resilient and ready for new opportunities and experiences. I hope this blog will give many of you some encouragement and that you will treat yourselves kindly, celebrating every step that you take to improve and learn.
