New Year, New Opportunities
A new year and a new term have begun and the Invicta community are busy with our learning and personal development.
Students from Years 9, 10 and 12 have started their mid-year examinations. Students from Years 7 and 8 will begin their examinations on Thursday of this week. These mid-term examinations will provide experience of being able to recall information within a limited timescale, to build resilience and confidence when taking examinations. They will also provide useful indicators on progress and identify topics that will require further study. On reflecting on their results students will be able to consider how they may move their learning forward over the next few weeks and months. Year 8 students and parents will be joining staff on Tuesday and Wednesday evening this week to discuss their current progress during the virtual parents evening.
Despite the difficulties of the last year, we are open for business and a new year also provides many opportunities for students to engage in the wider life of the school and to take on new challenge and build new memories and a positive future.
This last weekend, a number of students took part in the Geneva FerMUN, one of the international Model UN conferences. Despite being a virtual event, this experience provided students with a much greater understanding of key global issues from the perspective of other countries across the world including, discussions on matters of health and the environment.
An invitation has just gone out to the senior years inviting them to sign up for the Invicta Senior Debate Competition. Debating is an important life skill and this year we are pleased to resume an in-person format. This will be followed by the Invicta Speaks public speaking competition, which is open to all years. This will be followed the week after by the Junior Debate competition. All will be live and in-person events and audiences will be encouraged to attend in order to question and engage with the topics debated. I look forward to seeing many students stepping up and taking part.
The Junior and Senior Law Hubs are currently practising for the Bar and Magistrates Mock Trial competitions and this Friday our legal advisor, a trainee barrister, will begin mentoring and advising the Senior team. We are awaiting the dates for the first round of these competitions.
There are other challenges available for students. We are currently recruiting for student ambassadors to work with Maidstone Museum, promoting one of the country’s leading provincial museums. The Maidstone Museum Foundation has launched a ‘Heritage Design’ challenge for students to create new products for the Museum shop inspired by artefacts on display. There are many other competitions available this term, including a new challenge set by the NHS to promote the wide range of jobs and careers available within the Health Service as a whole. There is also a number of competitions set by the Rotary Club. It is not too late to sign up for a Club or Society or to join an Academic Hub discussion group. Do consider exploring what is available, get involved, make the most of the opportunities and build memories for 2022!
