It seems to me that we are living in a world where we are constantly in need of making important decisions.
Just this week, I have had students, teachers and parents talk to me about decisions related to options, trips, choice of school and university, budgets and friendship – such diverse, but very important aspects of our day to day life. I know that for me, the decisions I make every day are crucial to the welfare of my students and staff, as well as my own family and most importantly my children. These decisions have to be well thought out, justified and pursued with vigour and commitment.
We are regularly reminded that we are all about to embark on the decision making process linked to the General Election in April. I am sure that we have all differing views on this and, as always, we will need to do our ‘homework’ in order to make the right decisions. We will, I am sure, be bombarded with campaigns that prey on our emotions as well as providing us with facts and figures. In balancing the two, we have to be careful, thoughtful and objective.
So, what I am effectively promoting is the need to research around the decisions we make! I would not want any of my students at Invicta to make decisions without research and great thought. The knowledge that your decision is based on accurate, up to date and valued information is undoubtedly critical in justifying the decision. There have been, on occasions, situations where I have witnessed decisions that have been made purely based on emotional response with no research and this is quite clearly not the way forward. I believe in acting on ‘gut instinct’ but would never advocate decision making based solely on this. To help prepare us for the decisions we make, it is essential we promote the need to ‘think’. This week, we have Year 9 and 10 students making decisions in their mock examinations on how best to ‘showcase’ their subject knowledge and skills. Our Year 8’s are researching their career and option choices for GCSE subjects and our parents and students will be learning about Dyslexia in an information evening. I will be visiting BETT, the world's leading learning technology event which brings innovation and inspiration to the education sector – something that Invicta is proud to be at the forefront of! It is experiences such as these which play a significant role in shaping the opinions we have, and how well informed our decisions are. Only time will tell whether or not the decisions we have made will be ones that we are pleased with; reflecting the time taken in making them. However, it is clear that experiences, knowledge and research are a vital first step.
