Berlin Day 3
Day three - There was very much a cold war theme to today's visits and the weather stuck to the script by being REALLY cold! First we saw the best-preserved section of the Berlin Wall at Bernauer Strasse. Here you can see how the wall literally sliced the city in two, with houses and apartment buildings literally up next to it. We heard of escape attempts by tunnel, high wires and even home-made hot air balloons.
After this we visited the site of a former East German secret police HQ. Our German guide, who spoke with the most flawless English I have ever heard, took us round and explained what happened if you were arrested by the Stasi- the East German police spies. Although there wasn't much to see per se, it was mainly an old police detention centre and prison, our guide spoke with such knowledge and expertise that I counted over 100 questions asked by our students. They literally could not get enough information out of her. Afterwards she said to me that she always likes taking school parties from the UK around as they tend to ask far more questions than German students.
After this we headed to the East-Side Gallery, another preserved section of the Berlin wall but a bit more more touristy. Our final stop was at Checkpoint Charlie;the old East-West crossing point. Here there are numerous souvenir shops and exhibition halls all selling cold war memorabilia and, to be honest, tourist tat. There is a nice photo attached of a group of our girls wearing communist-era police caps whcih you can buy as souvenirs.
After this it was back to the airport. Our driver Ritchie was a big hit as he led some singing on the coach to pass the journey.
The return flight was nice and smooth and we got back to Invicta at 10 pm with all parents ready and waiting.
