2016 Greece - Day 4
Greece Day Four
As we embarked on an epic journey around the Peloponnese to Olympia, we were thrilled to see it was a nice sunny day. We stopped in Mystras, by modern day Sparta. The Vale of Laecademon was breath taking and full to bursting with wild flowers, and with Mount Taegytus behind us, it was incredible to imagine a civilisation such as the warlike Spartans living there. We then headed up to a castle perched above the ancient Byzantine city of Mystras, an empire which grew from what was left of the Roman Empire when the western half collapsed. Its capital was Constantinople, modern day Istanbul. After the steep and uneven climb up, we were rewarded with stunning scenic landscapes over the mountain ringed valley and plain of the Eurotas: some amazing photos were taken. As we wended our way back down, we explored old churches which were home to beautiful frescos. We met the coach at the bottom and most of us had a snooze on the second half of our journey to Olympia. The hotel was stunning and the town very friendly and picturesque.
