Last Friday, I went to see the new animated version of the Jungle Book film – a great way to start the weekend and as you can see, I am a child at heart! The reason for going was that this film has always been a family favourite and I was keen to see the new animation. Not only was it really enjoyable but it was incredible to see how cleverly it had been put together – it was clearly a crafted digital film whose astonishing visual effects complemented the great story telling and tremendous voice work. I still cannot get over the fact that the animals were as life-like as in a natural history documentary - we could see every ripple of their muscles! But, what also impressed me was the remarkable performance of Mowgli, the only live action character, who had to act in front of a blue screen because the animals were added in afterwards. Sethi (Mowgli) played the part with a fieriness and gumption, whilst each individual shot took weeks to animate. This is not only amazing, but to be admired.
The concept of admiration had then got me thinking about the events that have taken place this week that I really do respect and value. The fact that so many of our students participated in our superb 70’s Concert, sharing their talents in an era when they were not even born! This, along with our Duke of Edinburgh students who have completed their Silver practice expedition this weekend, with very cold and wintry conditions. Then, to see our Language Prefects share their love of French, German and Spanish with our ‘new’ Year 7 students, who were completely new to most of the languages, on Saturday was lovely. They compare favourably with the admiration I have of the technical wizardry in the Jungle Book, because not only are these students able to adapt to the demands of their tasks, but they do it with humour and enthusiasm – just like I saw Mowgli when singing ‘I want to be like you’. Everyone knows this track but what resonates with me and will do, for such a long time, is the fact that one of our new entrants said to me on Saturday, I want to be good at German like Erin! Erin is one of our Language Prefects that gave up her Saturday to help at our workshop for the new entrants. What an accolade! This is something to be admired and very much valued! It is also what makes Invicta such a special school!
