Our theme for this week, is ‘Learning from mistakes’. Our Business and Enterprise specialism naturally promotes the fact that every person, and especially every entrepreneur, should embrace failure with open arms. It is only through failure that we learn. Many of the world’s success stories – both people and products – have learned and become effective this way. So, I was most impressed last week, when I heard a Year 6 student who had not passed the Kent Test, quote that she had embraced the concept of her personal failure, by stating that it was her First Attempt In Learning. Her determination to learn from her mistakes and ensure that she continued to do well at school so that she could make rapid progress throughout this year, was pleasing and uplifting. I really did admire her tenacity and determination. I loved her quote and will without doubt, be using it!
This made me think about the quotes that I like, with regard to the concept of embracing failure and learning. They are:
- Success is most often achieved by those who do not know that failure is inevitable - Coco Chanel.
- I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I have been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed - Michael Jordan.
- I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work - Thomas Edison.
So, this week, as our Year 11 girls embark fully upon their GCSE examinations, I really do want them to think about the fact, that they may well make mistakes in an area of their revision, or perhaps a specific paper. But, as long as they look positively towards their next step – be that the following question or paper – they will succeed. I really do wish them all the very best. They have worked incredibly hard on the ‘run up’ to their exams, and we are, as a whole staff, confident in their ability. They certainly deserve to do well. I am extremely proud of every Year 11 student – they are a conscientious and delightful year group. So, as much as they might learn from our Invicta staff and their own personal experiences, I do hope that they might take heed of one of our Year 6 students, who will clearly go a long way in life with such a positive approach! I also wish our Year 6 students the very best of luck this week as they complete their SATS exams too!
