Nature POP
On Wednesday afternoon 60 students strolled around Vinters Valley Nature Reserve for the first of six guided Nature Walks. There was much enjoyment and chatter as students began to identify trees and learn facts and fables of the tree world.
The students really enjoyed being out of the classroom, exploring the natural world and taking in the fresh air. They now know a little more about British wildlife and are learning to recognise and identify various tree and plant species.
Highlights of this session were ‘hugging the soft bark of the giant Redwood’ and ‘making it safely through the mysterious Yew grotto’.
Future POP Nature Walks will include:
- An expedition to ‘see & selfie’ by the famous Giant Sequoia.
- Sharing sweets and stories in the secret garden at the reserve.
- Pond life and keeping the ducks happy with healthy bird seed.
The Vinters Valley Nature Reserve is the remaining part of a large country estate with a long and eventful history. Roman remains have been found on the site in the past, but the first recorded history was when a Roger de Vinter bought the land from the Abbott of Boxley in 1343, and built the first house. He also created the park and gave his name to the property. Our school has in fact, been built upon the estate parkland which explains the number and variety of unusual tree species across the site.
