Staff Profile - Mr Lam
Name: Mr. Lam
Role: Science Technician
Subject: Science
Favourite Book: 1984. It describes the future when human beings live in a world of terror under totalitarian rule, and human nature is completely stifled. Children under education have also monitored and reported their parents from an early age, and family, friendship, and love have disappeared --- How do you know for sure that another person is on your side? This book reminds me of the country where I lived a few years ago, which is even worse at the moment.
Favourite Film: Interstellar (2014). I am always an SF movie lover. In addition to incorporating difficult astronomical and physical principles, the story structure presents the insignificance of human beings under the vast and boundless universe, as well as the reality of human nature in the face of life and death. However, love is the one thing that transcends time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we cannot understand it.
Hobbies: I have been playing Magic: The Gathering with my family members, friends, and students for more than 20 years, but I quit after the 2019 Hong Kong Protest. Now I am finding new hobbies in the UK, if you have any ideas for me, do let me know.
Favourite Food: I like eating raw with some famous Asian cuisine. Japanese raw lobster, Thai shrimp sashimi, and Korean live octopus are all my favourites. You can easily perceive the fifth taste "Umami" by eating these foods, but do make sure that the seafood is fresh and hygienic before consumption.
Favourite Holiday destination: Jiufen of Taiwan. A beautiful trip is not only attracted by the beautiful landscapes but also indulged in the strong local human feelings. When you come to an unfamiliar place, it feels familiar, and the strong human touch makes you live as freely as a local. There is a famous quote: “The most beautiful scenery of Taiwan is its people”, Jiufen has the friendliest people you will ever encounter. This small country has also incredible food, easy to travel around, beaches to lie on and mountains to climb.
If you did not work in a school what job would you like to do? I was a birdwatcher trainer for World Wide Fund for Nature (Hong Kong), and I would be doing a similar job if I did not work in a school. In fact, it's not really about bird watching, the true rationale behind is by observing the habitat of birds and nature, I can discover the impact of humans on the environment. That is the destruction of the existing nature by human beings for their own selfish interests. Now the birds are the victims, then human beings themselves will be the next.
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? Making the decision to emigrate from Hong Kong, and adapt to the UK lifestyle. I said goodbye to my homeland and moved to the UK one year ago, I have to give up my career in Hong Kong for half my life, and leave my relatives and friends. After I have settled down, I learned to integrate into the British community, as well as make a contribution to society; therefore, I joined the NHS workforce of the COVID vaccination centre in Bromley. Through daily communication with local people, my values and beliefs have become similar to British.
Why did you decide to work in education? I was a teacher teaching Mathematics and Science in Hong Kong. When I was studying in year 7 or 8, I started noticing that the attitudes, rather than the knowledge or skill, of teachers have more impact on the knowledge construction processes of students, which I verified true after I had completed my first postgraduate research. Therefore, I took part in the educational field so as to do a more positive impact on the new generation.
How have you found your first term at Invicta? Up till now, I sense that all staff is well-equipped professionals, and the students are among the best of the best. Let me tell you later after I have made more observations.
