Year 12 - Computer Science in Action Trip
Christabel in Bronte 1 and Tanya in Colvin 1 sent this report:
On Thursday, 10 November, 12 Computer Science students travelled to London for a day of lectures.
Once we arrived in London, we were welcomed with an introduction from Paul Long (the chairman) to start the day. Then lecturer Yee Mun Lee delivered an interesting talk about the future of automated cars, what they have to offer and how we can prepare machines for the unpredictability of human brains. James Arthur came next, enthusiastically talking about the “Searching for the Truth”; proving how complex computer science will become. He went into great depth (i.e. proving mathematical theories) using a programming language called ‘lean’.
Finally, before lunch, we heard from Miranda Mowbray about algorithms from 13th century Venice, showing how computational thinking was relevant centuries ago and influenced algorithms today.
After the rush of the London lunch hour we returned to the Emmanuel Centre for a short exam tips session. Afterwards we had the, collectively agreed, best talk of the day on smart cities by Matthew Leeke. It was a highly amusing lecture informing us how even a small amount of data allows a lot of information about us to be gathered. Our final lecture was with Mark Jago and a talk on Logic - The Turing machine, and the influence Turing had on many modern-day computers.
The day ended and we all returned to London Victoria to wait for our train. Boarding on time and, despite the technical issues (a fire on the track resulting in our stranding at Bromley), we all reached home safely. All in all it was a great day to expand our knowledge on a subject we enjoy.
