Year 12 Community Day
Hermione in Frank 2 had this to say about the day: On Friday, myself and Year 12 all took part in a Community Day to help our local community.
It ranged in activities from helping out at primary schools, providing afternoon tea for the elderly and filling out surveys in Leeds Castle.
At Leeds Castle, my group asked visitors to complete surveys, tidied and put up decorations for Christmas and reviewed some of the facilities ourselves. We were given guidance of what to do and how to help, and we all made sure we completed everything they’d asked and more.
We wanted to make our presence worthwhile, making sure Leeds Castle (and all places my year had visited) will remember all the help we gave them willingly. Community Day, I feel, is very important as it allows us to meet with people we would never normally speak to, for example those who visited the care home, help those out with little but essential jobs, like those painting at the hockey club and ultimately allow us to give back to the local community that has done so much for us. I think as a whole year group we can honestly say it was really nice exploring areas of our local community we maybe hadn’t before and doing something that was mutually beneficial for the place we helped out at, and for ourselves.
Rubie in Curie 1 also thoroughly enjoyed her Community Day, which was spent at Buttercups Goat Sanctuary:
On Friday we volunteered at Buttercups Goat Sanctuary. We spent the day doing tasks to help out the full time volunteers, including brushing the goats, mucking out their pens, filling up the hay, making the goats meals, sweeping and clearing leaves. Despite the cold weather, most of the goats were happy to great us, although we had to move a few reluctant ones in order to clean their beds. Altogether it was a good day.
Lily in Pankhurst 2 sent this report:
Last Friday, Year 12 students participated in a Community Day, forming a key part of the school’s RAG (Raising and Giving) Week. Activities included supporting in a local primary school, engaging in arts and crafts at Maidstone Library or painting Maidstone Football Club’s changing rooms.
My group hosted an afternoon tea for residents of a care home. We spent the morning setting up (laying the tables, making sandwiches, decorating the mezzanine and designing a bingo-style quiz), all set to background Christmas music. Welcoming the guests as they arrived and allowing them to settle down, we introduced the Year 13 carollers. After the performance, the senior citizens competed in the quiz, with food and drinks being served throughout the event. We only hope that they enjoyed themselves as much as we did!
Overall, the day was a fantastic opportunity for us to give something back to our community, especially at Christmas time, which everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed.
