Year 9 and 10 Food and Nutrition Trip - Italy
Mrs Bond sent this report:
What an amazing few days our Year 9 and 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition students have had!
Day 1 - We had an early start on Saturday, 11 March, leaving Gatwick at 7.40am for Italy; arriving in Sorrento at lunchtime. Students had some free time to wander the beautiful narrow streets, lined with fruit stalls, (very popular) jewellery stalls, leather and ceramic shops.
We then made our way to our first workshop; pizza making, where we had the restaurant all to ourselves. Students were taught how to make authentic Italian pizza dough and had a go at throwing and shaping it before adding toppings, and cooking it. The best bit was eating their creations! We then went to a gelaterie where students learnt all about gelato; how it differs from ice-cream and the importance of using fresh ingredients. Thanks to Evie’s skills at scooping the gelato from the machine we all had double helpings of the amazing gelato flavours on offer!
Day 2 - We woke to more sunshine on day 2 which was perfect for our visit to a mozzarella farm, which also grew lemons and olives. The students learnt about the climate and terrain of the farm and how the olives are harvested, they also experienced a traditional way of making mozzarella, by the lovely Maria. This was a highlight of the trip. Students were then encouraged to try different flavour olive oils, the fresh mozzarella and milk cake. Following this we went to a pasta factory where students had an immersive virtual reality explanation of the history of pasta making in the area of Naples and a behind-the-scenes view of the production area of the factory. It was then time for more food! A fabulous tasting menu of three different pasta dishes created by a Michelin star chef in the factory restaurant.
Day 3 - On day 3, after a windy drive through Vesuvius National Park students then climbed to the crater of the volcano; this was hard work, but everyone was proud when they reached the top and could admire the breath-taking views. After some time exploring the summit it was then time for the descent, which was a little slippy at times! We then made our way to Pompei, with our brilliant guides, to explore the ancient preserved town. This was a sobering and incredible experience.
