Staff Profile - Dr Warren-Heys
Name: Dr Warren-Heys
Role: Teacher
Subject: English
Favourite Book: This is a tough one for an English teacher as I have dozens, but something I try to re-read about once a year is ‘Any Human Heart’ by William Boyd. It’s a bildungsroman which follows the protagonist throughout his life, which spans the twenty-first century. He meets incredible individuals from history, but the thing I love is that despite this remarkable life he makes the same mistakes and endures the same suffering as ‘any human heart’. Boyd’s ‘Sweet Caress’ is in the same ‘whole life’ ilk and I love that one too.
Favourite Film: Hard to choose just one. Something I return to again and again, particularly when I’m ill in bed and need something familiar and comforting, is ‘Little Woman’ starring Saoirse Ronan, and Joe Wright’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ starring Keira Knightley.
Hobbies: I have three children from the ages of 8 to 16, so I don’t get very much free time, but I try and guard my Sunday afternoons as ‘time off’ and I like to sit and read. I have a favourite spot on our couch in the kitchen!
Favourite Food: Lasagne. Classic!
Favourite Holiday destination: Italy – particularly the Riviera – Florence and Naples, for example.
If you did not work in a school what job would you like to do? Librarian. I love books!
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? Educationally, my PhD which is in Shakespeare. I had a maternity leave half way through and took a writing-up year so it took me 5 years. But if something is important to you, you have to find a way!
Why did you decide to work in education? I am invested in drawing alongside young people and helping them to grow, to become the best possible versions of themselves, and to discover their gifts and talents. And hopefully to discover some joy along the way!
How did you find your first term at Invicta? There were a lot of new systems, processes and procedures I had to learn, which were all very different from my last school. But, by the end of term 1, I felt much calmer and in control!
