Geography Trip - Iceland 2024
Lexie in Curie 2 sent this report:
Over the February half term a cohort of 60 keen geographers had the privilege of visiting Iceland to take part in a multitude of once in a lifetime activities. After a particularly early departure from Stansted Airport, we arrived in Reykjavík to a fresh -2 degrees and blankets of snow - a stark contrast to our usual Maidstone weather conditions. After a visit to the local swimming centre, due to the Blue lagoon unfortunately being closed as a result of volcanic eruptions, we headed to our first accommodation to prepare for a day of activities.
A particular highlight on day two for me was the glacier walking, when we explored the miles deep ice at Rangárping eystra and witnessed evidence of its erosion - all with the expert help of our tour guides who kept us safe! Throughout our stay we also got the opportunity to visit Selfoss; in which we walked through a lava tunnel, attended an extremely informative talk about the geothermal power station and erupting geisers. Having never visited the country before the rich culture and friendly population, as well as enthusiastic tour guides, made this trip an extremely memorable experience. I believe I speak for a whole cohort when I say this visit ignited our passion of our geographical studies, with tangible experience to talk about throughout our course. Our final activity was a trip to the secret lagoon and the hamburger factory, which consisted of swimming in a naturally heated pool similar to that of the blue lagoon.
I would like to thank all of the Geography department for making this trip possible, and being as equally as enthusiastic as we were - even on the final morning when we had to leave for the airport at 2:30am!
