Virtual Magistrates - Mock Trial
Miss Griggs sent this report:
On Thursday, 21 March, a team of 17 students across Year 7 to 9 competed in a Virtual Magistrates Mock Trial, hosted by Young Citizens.
The students have been preparing and working hard on putting their cases together since October ready for competition, and despite not being able to participate in person, rose to the opportunity to represent the school virtually. We had some tough competition on the day, with our students aged 11-14 going up against Year 10, 11 and college students, yet they held their own and presented their cases brilliantly winning both rounds as Prosecution and Defence.
I would like to give a special shoutout to Nishka in 9C, and Kitty in 7N, who stood out with their performances on the day. Nishka was confident in her delivery of questioning as a Prosecution Lawyer, and Kitty learnt all information off by heart, not requiring any scripts, and giving the Prosecution Lawyer on the opposing team a challenge. The whole team came together on the day, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you for the hard work and dedication you have put into the competition over the last six months. I have no doubt that we will be able to place next year!

The Law Hub trial was an amazing experience and opportunity I got to participate in. The team all worked together to create two cases where the magistrates were on our side. In the first round, the Defendant was found guilty, in favour of our Prosecution team (5-1 votes) and in the second round, the Defendant was found not guilty, in favour of our Defence team (4-3 votes) it was amazing, and it was wonderful seeing how everyone handled it professionally and just like they were in court.

Throughout the day we competed against 2 different schools from around England. We each payed a role throughout the day whilst in the competition, some roles consisted of lawyers, magistrates, legal advisers and more. I was a legal adviser and gave a speech and a statement while we were acting for the prosecution side. The whole day was fun and a new experience for me. It will definitely be something I would try and get involved with next year.
