Last week, we celebrated Roald Dahl Day – marking what would have been the much-loved author’s 100th birthday. He was a magnificent writer and I am sure that most of us would have had the pleasure of reading and taking inspiration from his books, which – filled with child-like wonder – champion the kind-hearted and the brave. What is more, I have no doubt that some of us have loved his darker, even more mischievous books, such as Tales of the Unexpected. There is no doubt that Roald Dahl has left a legacy for creative, imaginative writing.
This academic year, we continue our drive to encourage our students to read and enjoy the benefits. We know that the more we read, the more knowledge we have, and the better equipped, we are to tackle challenges. The more we read, the more words we gain exposure to; they will inevitably make their way into our everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is essential in any profession, and knowing that we can speak with self-confidence can be an enormous boost to our self-esteem. It also is widely recognised that our memory, concentration, analytical and writing skills are enhanced too. But, most of all it is entertaining – especially when you are reading from authors like Roald Dahl! As such, I thought it would be pertinent to share with you a couple of my favourite quotes from Dahl:
“It is almost worth going away because it's so lovely coming back.”
Boy: Tales of Childhood
“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
The Minpins
So, I do hope that we can encourage one another to share the wonderful magic of reading. Please join us in our drive to discover the world’s greatest secrets in a book!
