World School Day 4 - Harajuku
After an early start and another long train journey back to school, it was time to set up our UK booth in preparation for the Kanto School Festival, which will take place tomorrow. The booth is our opportunity to showcase, UK, Kent and particularly Invicta. As the theme of the forum was Food and Culture, we had brought items of traditional food such as Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, tea, shortbread and Angel Delight. We decorated the booth with the different flags of UK and displayed photographs of Invicta food related events such as the Burns Night Supper, Invicta Over 60’s Club Christmas lunch and the school Christmas lunch. Edward, the Invicta World School mascot also put an appearance in at the booth. He is a very experienced member of the team, after visits to Japan, Russia, Italy and USA to take part in World School.
We would like to thank Mr Chris Venus from Speedscreen in Maidstone, who designed and printed our Invicta banner.
We were to have lunch with Junior High School students from Harajuku Gaien School, which involved another train ride! The Year 8 students had been practising their English for many weeks before our arrival and were very nervous about meeting the delegates but they did extremely well. There were a lot of hand gestures and laughter as we practiced our Japanese too! After lunch, we headed out with the junior school students into the now torrential rain to experience the Harajuku shopping area. This is one of the busiest shopping areas in Tokyo and was rather hard to negotiate with all the umbrellas crashing into each other! We were taken to a shrine and were shown how to make a blessing and witnessed a wedding couple dressed in the full Japanese kimono.
Soaking wet, we went back to Kanto to meet with our host families and take the train ride back to our individual homes.
