World School Days 8 and 9 - Seminars and Japanese Cooking
The next few days of World School would see the students splitting into groups to discuss convenience, heath and culture as related to the theme of “Food and Culture”. The idea was for them to brain storm ideas, based on the months of research they had completed while in their home countries. The result would be a number of “Calls to Action” which would bring solutions to the issues identified. For example, with the modern nuclear family eating more frozen or pre-packaged meals, there has been a loss of cooking skills. The students thought that schools should provide home economics/food technology classes to teach students basic skills that would allow them to eat meals that had more nutrition and also maintain traditional meals. Invicta already has such facilities but many schools do not. The delegates were challenged on how they could develop this suggestion. Where would this class take place? Would a new classroom need to be built or an existing one refurbished? Would a new teacher need to be appointed or an existing one trained or could a volunteer such as a parent deliver the class? Who would pay for the ingredient? Should the class be taught at exam level or a fun club? The issues and solutions were endless and very thought provoking as each student brought a different perspective to the discussion.
However, it was not all work and we were treated to a traditional cookery lesson delivered by a number of professional chefs. We are now all experts in making Japanese soup and ginger rice. Many students had never been in a professional kitchen and some looked as if they had never picked up a knife before!
The highlight of the day for both students and staff was a repeat of all the country performances. This was an opportunity for the delegates to perform to a smaller audience consisting of just their new found friends. What a fantastic variety of singing, folk dancing, gum boot dancing and karate!! The Invicta girls yet again wowed the crowds. The evening ended with the first rendition of the World School song and a 100 person group hug!
